ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The results of numerous medical and kinesiological studies indicate the existence of differences in pulmonary function in relation to age, body height, and the relationship between certain parameters of body composition. The aim of this study was to determine the state of morphological characteristics and pulmonary function of naval saboteurs and ground Special Forces of the Armed Forces of Montenegro. The sample of participants included 30 naval saboteurs aged 30.3±6 years and 30 members of the ground special forces aged 25.6±5 years. The sample of measuring instruments included 4 indicators each for the evaluation of longitudinal dimensionality, transversal dimensionality, mass and body volume, subcutaneous fat, body composition, and pulmonary function. The central and dispersion parameters of the variables were calculated. The specificities of body composition of the naval saboteurs and members of the ground Special Forces of the AF of Montenegro were determined, while the parameters of lung volume and capacity and the parameters of airway flow indicated an excellent state of their respiratory function. Furthermore, it was determined that the studied members of the armed forces had no individual health risks in the sense of the onset of obesity or obstructive ventilatory defects. The results obtained indicate the need for further studies which would predominantly focus on the impact of individual morphological measurements and parameters of body composition on pulmonary function. This would provide important data both for the armed forces in the sense of improving the training system and the realization of specific tasks, as well as for kinesiology as a science from the aspect of determining certain regularities in the functioning of the human body in specific living and working conditions in the armed forces.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Respiration and water-liquid transportation are controlled by many factors in the lung. The aim of this study was to explore the structure and proteins expression in lungs of Phrynocephalus vlangalii by means of gross anatomy, light microscope observation, scanning electron microscope and immunohistochemistry. Results show that there were many alveoli in the lung and the walls of alveoli and capillaries were very thin. The inner surface of the lung was divided into many cystic chambers by reticular diaphragm, and the network of pulmonary capillaries was dense. Immunohistochemistry showed that AQP1 was mainly expressed in the epithelium of interstitial bronchi, parabronchiole endothelium, capillary endothelium and alveolar epithelial cells. VIP positive nerve fibers are mainly distributed in trachea, bronchial smooth muscle layer, the walls of pulmonary vessels and bronchial vessels and around submucosal glands. CECR2 is distributed in peripheral capillaries and small. Investigations of structure and proteins biology could be relevant with the adaptive strategy to drought and hypoxia environment in Phrynocephalus vlangalii.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Azygos lobe is one of the most common pulmonary variations. Although numerous studies discuss to the clinical and surgical implications of anatomical variations, there are few investigations about this topic. The aim of this study was to discuss the anatomy of the pulmonary azygos lobe and its possible clinical and surgical correlations. In this systematic review, a total of 48 results were found between 1968 and 2020. After application of eligibility criteria, 16 articles were included to analysis. Our results showed there were no reports of surgery complications in azygos lobe presence. In all articles that described the anatomical variation, the pulmonary azygos lobe received tertiary segmental branches. Among the surgical implications in the presence of the azygos lobe, complications are of low complexity. It is necessary to teach about this anatomical variation in medical schools in cadavers. Emphasizing the obvious morphological modifications in the superior mediastinum.

ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: The histo-morphology and biometry of liver, lung and kidney of goat were studied. The obtained samples were divided into two groups. One set of tissue was processed for paraffin embedding after formalin fixation. The other set was indigenously plastinated. The plastinates were embedded with paraffin without deplastination. Both the non plastinated and plastinated tissues were sectioned and processed for routine staining. The tissues were examined under light microscope for histological architectures and quantitatively assessed the biometric parameters. The non plastinated and plastinated samples yielded mostly similar histological architectures. But plastinated liver showed alterations and artifacts with enlargement of the central vein and hepatic sinusoidal space. Plastinated lung revealed enlarged alveolar sac. Lack of nuclear clarity was observed for all the plastinated samples. The plastinated kidney revealed compactness of the cellular structures and shrinkage induced artifacts with clear renal corpuscles structure and obvious glomerular capsule (Bowman's capsule). The biometric measurements of central vein of liver, alveolar sac of lung, glomerulus and glomerular space of kidney of both plastinated and non plastinated tissue were also performed using calibrated stage micrometer. Comparison was done between the biometric data for both plastinated and non plastinated tissue. No significant difference was found in the obtained biometric data of liver and lung. Only a significant difference was observed between the width of glomerulus of non plastinated kidney and width of glomerulus of plastinated kidney. The morphological and biometric study of non plastinated and plastinated organs of goat can conclude that histological slides can be made from indigenously plastinated organs with well preserved histological architectures of the tissues with some rare exceptions. Plastination does not affect the biometric characteristics of the organs. In addition, the comparative morphologic and biometric study of plastinated and non plastinated organs of goat will be useful in education and research.

ABSTRACT

Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is a wild mammal distributed in Central and South America; nowadays, it is classified as an endangered species. Research about the macroscopic and histomorphological aspects of its respiratory tract is scarce, and, sometimes, it limits the treatment provided to sick animals and impairs species preservation. Thus, the present study aims to describe the macroscopic and microscopic morphology of its lower respiratory tract, including trachea and lungs. To do so, 12 adult giant anteaters from "Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres de Goiânia" (CETAS-GO), Goiás State, Brazil, were used in the research after natural death or euthanasia. Three of these animals were used for macroscopic assessments; they were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and dissected. Trachea and lung tissue samples were collected from nine animals right after death and fixed in 10% buffered formalin for histomorphological analysis; they were processed, embedded in paraffin, and inked with hematoxylin-eosin (HE), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), and Masson's trichrome. The macroscopic analysis showed that the trachea in this species is proportionally short and presents from 19 to 27 tracheal cartilages. The right lung presents four lobes and the left one, two. The microscopic analysis evidenced respiratory epithelium of the ciliated cylindrical pseudostratified type, without evident goblet cells in the mucosa layer of the trachea and bronchi. The pulmonary visceral pleura is thick, similar to other large domestic mammals - complete septa extend from the pulmonary visceral pleura. In conclusion, the macroscopy and histomorphology of giant anteater's lower respiratory tract, represented by trachea and lungs, are similar to that of other domestic and wild mammals. Pulmonary histomorphology is mainly similar to that of pigs and ruminants: it has thick visceral pleura that emits complete septa of conjunctive tissue, which enable lobular parenchymal architecture.(AU)

Desse modo, o objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a morfologia macroscópica e microscópica do aparelho respiratório inferior do tamanduá-bandeira, incluindo traqueia e pulmões.

ABSTRACT

Study: Case Report. Importance: Lobos and accessory fissures in the lungs can induce errors of interpretation and diagnosis, as well as favor the spread of pathologies such as pneumonia to adjacent lobes. Thus, the confirmation of these anatomical alterations can collaborate in clinical diagnoses and surgical procedures. Comments: We report a rare case of anatomical variation in the lobes and fissures of the lungs. The left lung showed an accessory middle lobe and a complete horizontal fissure. On the other hand, the right lung had two incomplete accessory fissures located inferiorly in the costal face of the middle lobe. In addition, we observed that the left lung hilum contained two lobar bronchi (upper and lower), one accessory lobar bronchus and three pulmonary arteries. Knowledge of the anatomical variations reported here is fundamental, as they help health professionals in diagnoses and therapeutic and surgical decisions (AU)

ABSTRACT

During dissection practice for medical students at Nagasaki University, a horizontal fissure and hypoplastic middle lobe were encountered in the right lung of an 81-year-old Japanese female. In a normal right lung, the horizontal fissure is situated anterior to the oblique fissure. On the contrary, in the present case, the horizontal fissure was situated posterior to the oblique fissure. We identified a small, additional lobe on the medial surface of this lung. It was situated in the medial part of the oblique fissure, and was determined to be a small hypoplastic middle lobe. As a result of the hypoplasia of the middle lobe, the original horizontal fissure may have disappeared from the anterior surface. The horizontal fissure, in this case, may be a compensatory additional fissure that developed within the inferior lobe. This horizontal fissure was incomplete, both in length and depth. The left lung was normal. This case might be very rare; however, it may aid in the understanding of normal lung development. Therefore, we report this case, including its bronchial branching and vascular distribution.

ABSTRACT

The laboratory rat (Rattus norvegicus albinus) laboratory rat has long been used as a biological model for research. Therefore knowledge of its anatomy, particularly as related to pulmonary lobulation is useful for any applications in the biomedical sciences. For this reason, 10 male rats of the Wistar strain were used. After being sacrificed by overdose of intraperitoneal thiopental and before extracting the lungs from the thoracic cavity, 7 of them were injected 10 % formalin intratracheal and the other 3, self-curing dental acrylic, subsequently placing the tissue in a KOH solution for corrosion. Thus, according to the observed bronchial tree, 4 lobes were observed in the right lung (cranial, middle, caudal and accessory) and only one lobe not divided in the left lung.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to describe the macroscopic aspects of the trachea, bronchus and lung lobes and microscopic aspects of the bronchi of raccoon lungs and compare with data from the literature studies performed with wild and domestic mammals. We used three samples of Procyon cancrivorus, which were fixed in aqueous 10% formaldehyde, lungs and trachea were dissected and photographed with a digital camera (Sony a200 Camera, 10.2mpx). For the identification of microscopic characteristics, fragments were collected from each bronchus following routine histological techniques. The Procyon cancrivorus lung is divided into four lobes, with two right and left lobes. The trachea has about 31-34 rings. The extrapulmonary bronchi divides into left and right, where the right is divided into lobar bronchi cranial, middle, accessory and caudal lobes and the left in cranial and caudal, with their respective segmental bronchi. Microscopically the bronchial epithelium has prismatic pseudo-ciliated and goblet cells with bundles of smooth muscle fibers, plates of hyaline cartilage and elastic fibers. Knowledge of the morphology of these organs in wild species helps us in descriptive studies and / or comparisons between species.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Five internal organs of bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) were plastinated and described, obtaining odorless, nontoxic and perdurable didactic models, which let their components to be modified in an unaltered context; the resulting specimens are opaque and firm, but not unbreakable, with an appearance similar to that of the living state. The anatomic descriptions were made in concordance with those of the authors presented within the antecedents of this study; reinforcing the knowledge that the internal organs of T. truncatus described here typify those of mammals in general aspects, since the great uniformity between their structural elements is revealed. Moreover, there are very few non pathological anatomic studies about dolphins; even though various mophometric and behavioral studies have been carried out, it still can be considered that several biological aspects of bottlenose dolphins remain to be described.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of our study was to determine the effect of induced apnea on quality of cardiopulmonary structures during computerized tomographic (CT) angiography images in children with congenital heart diseases. Methods: Pediatric patients with congenital heart defects undergoing cardiac CT angiography at our facility in the past 3 years participated in this study. The earlier patients underwent cardiac CT angiography without induced apnea and while, later, apnea was induced in patients, which was followed by electrocardiogram gated cardiac CT angiography. General anesthesia was induced using sleep dose of intravenous propofol. After the initial check CT, on request by the radiologist, apnea was induced by the anesthesiologist by administering 1 mg/kg of intravenous suxamethonium. Soon after apnea ensued, the contrast was injected, and CT angiogram carried out. CT images in the “apnea group” were compared with those in “nonapnea group.” After the completion of the procedure, the patients were mask ventilated with 100% oxygen till the spontaneous ventilation was restored. Results: We studied 46 patients, of whom 36 with apnea and yet another 10 without. The quality of the image, visualization of structures such as cardiac wall, outflow tracts, lung field, aortopulmonary shunts, and coronary arteries were analyzed and subjected to statistical analysis (Mann–Whitney U, Fischer’s exact test and Pearson’s Chi‑square test). In the induced apnea group, overall image quality was considered excellent in 89% (n = 33) of the studies, while in the “no apnea group,” only 30% of studies were excellent. Absent or minimal motion artifacts were seen in a majority of the studies in apnea group (94%). In the nonapnea group, the respiratory and body motion artifacts were severe in 50%, moderate in 30%, and minimal in 20%, but they were significantly lesser in the apnea group. All the studied parameters were statistically significant in the apnea group in contrast to nonapnea group (P < 0.000). Conclusion: The image quality of cardiac CT angiography greatly improves, and motion artifact significantly decreases with the use of induced apnea in pediatrics patients being evaluated for congenital heart disease. This technique poses no additional morbidity of significance.

ABSTRACT

Due to the growing interest of the ostrich industry (Struthio camelus var. domesticus) and the scarce bibliographic material related to morphology of the respiratory system of the ostrich, we carried out a comparative analysis of the laryngotracheal pulmonary segment of this bird. The research was conducted in six clinically healthy ostriches from which representative samples of the laryngotracheal pulmonary segment were obtained. Samples were processed using standard histological technique and a comparative morphological analysis between ostriches and chicken (Gallus gallus) was performed. In the ostrich, the arytenoid cartilage is double and placed in a dorsal and cranial position in relation to the larynx while the cricoid cartilage is single and situated in a ventral and caudal position. Like the chicken, the procricoid cartilage is also present. The trachea exhibits a greater number of rings compared to the chicken. At the syrinx level, the pessulus is made up of a dorso-ventral double-fold of mucous membrane with a lamina propria of dense connective tissue over a thick adipose layer. Unlike the chicken the ostrich pessulus does not contain any ossified or cartilaginous tissues. The mucosa between the larynx and secondary bronchi has a pseudostratified prismatic ciliated epithelium with mucous goblet cells with crypts and simple tubuloalveolar mucosal glands for mucous secretion. In the extrapulmonary primary bronchi this histological feature is observed only in the medial aspect where the ends of the cartilaginous rings are found. The remaining mucosa of these bronchi has a pseudostratified prismatic ciliated epithelium with mucous goblet cells. Aerial sacs show this histological feature in some sectors.
